Sweet, Sweet Spirit

Carol Carpenter’s play Sweet, Sweet Spirit examines the fallout for a conservative Christian family in West Texas when the enraged father beats his teenage son into a coma after discovering that his son is gay. Fear of someone who is “other” fuels the father’s rage, as well as the family’s own confused and conflicting responses to a tragic situation. In a 2017 production at the Academy of Music Theatre (Northampton, MA), Lindel Hart played Kendall Kuykendall, the boy’s music teacher who as a teen was also abused by the boy’s father, his childhood friend.
